Google today announced the general availability of a brand new Application programming interface for Google Docs that can allow developers to automate a lot of the tasks that users do manually in the provider's on-line office package. The Application programming interface has been in a developer preview since last April Google Cloud Next 2018 and is available to all developers.

As Google notes, the REST Application programming interface was made to help developers build workflow automation services for their users, assemble content management services and make documents in bulk. Utilizing the Application programming interface, developers may also install procedures that manipulate documents after the fact to upgrade them, and also the Application programming interface also features the capability to insert, delete, move, merge and format text, insert inline pictures and work with lists, among others things.

The canonical use case here's invoicing, where you need to regularly make comparable documents with changing order number and line objects based on info from 3rd party systems. Google also notes that the API's import/export abilities permit you to use Docs for internal content management systems.

A few of the companies which built solutions based on the new API through the preview period includes Zapier, Netflix, Mailchimp and Final Draft. Zapier integrated the Docs Application programming interface to its own workflow automation tool to help its users create bid templates based on a template, for instance, while Netflix used it to build an internal tool which aids its engineers gather information and automate its own documentation workflow.
